Opinion Writing Activity: Classroom Freebie

This Friday, I (along with my classmates) will have the honor of hosting the annual Developing Young Writers’ Conference here at Wartburg. As part of this conference, we were responsible for developing one writing lesson adhered to the common core state standards. We decided to get creative and make it fun and engaging for the students. So, I present to you our 2nd grade opinion writing activity!

Opinion Writing Activity

We knew we wanted to get the students thinking critically about why we should support our opinion with reasoning, so we figured candy would be some great motivation. We plan on having the students choose whether they want to try 4 different kinds of Hershey’s kisses, or 4 different colors of Starburst. While they eat their candy, they’ll need to think of one reason why a particular candy is their favorite, and write this reason on a sticky note. They’ll share this reason with the group to get the other students thinking about their peer’s responses.

The students will then fill out this opinion planner, which walks them through the necessary steps for writing an opinion piece.

Once they’re ready to move on to the next stage, we made up these sheets to write their final draft on.

And, finally, this will be our form of assessment to check the students’ understanding of our objectives:
