Seeing as how I am giving a presentation this afternoon on vocabulary, I figured today would be the perfect day to share with you a classroom resource that I created to help build students’ vocabulary.
The task of teaching vocabulary to students can seem a little daunting; there’s numerous programs out there that can make it seem a bit more sequential. Fry words is an example. This program takes the most common words seen in reading and writing and splits them up into ten levels. Students master each level before moving on to the next one. You can learn more about Fry words here.
To make learning new words more fun, I created a game out of it. It’s very similar to the game Memory – student will turn the cards face down, draw two cards, and if they are a match, they get to keep the pair! The student with the most pairs at the end of the game is the winner. The game I created has words from the third-100 list of Fry words for grades 2-3.
