Today I offer you another free classroom resource, because who doesn’t love free things, right? Anyways, today’s resource is a syllable sort. The package includes five different pages of words, with 1-3 syllables, that students sort out using the headings included. There is also a worksheet for students to keep track of where they are putting each word, thus incorporating some writing practice as well! Teaching syllables is an important part of phonological awareness, and this is a fun and engaging way to do so!
I plan on using the sort in conjunction with Jan Brett’s book, “The Mitten.” I have always loved this book, and it’s a good winter-themed book to use during the dreary months here in Iowa. It also lends itself well to a great discussion about the theme of the story.
